AUSTRALIAN DUATHLON SERIES

The new look 2010-2011 Australian Duathlon Series was recently launched and will see one race held in each State. Tasmania’s event will be run by Triathlon South at the Rokeby Police Academy on Sunday October 3 2010 and will double as the MyState Financial Tasmanian Duathlon Championships.

DOMESTIC DUATHLON SERIES UNDER THE ONE BANNER

The launch of the Australian Duathlon Series sees each of the traditional state-based duathlon championships packaged into an integrated series under a uniform format.

Its aim is to create an Australia-wide competition that provides an opportunity for duathlon competitors to travel interstate and experience events in attractive locations. This year’s Australian Championships, for example, will be held in the beautiful Barossa Valley on August 15.

The series caters for the novice, age group and elite competitors. Each event will incorporate some or all of the following races: novice, sprint, classic and endure. The distances and surfaces (on-road or off-road) may vary according to each location.

Duathlon, of course, consists of a second shorter run leg instead of the swim leg in a traditional triathlon. So, whether you’re a duathlon specialist, an elite triathlete looking to improve your run speed and bike power, an age grouper searching for decent hit-outs over the cooler months, or a novice looking to sample a fun multisport, check out the Australian Duathlon Series.

The dates are listed below or you can go to http://www.australianduathlonseries.com for more details.

Series Presentations – Saturday 15th May - Save the Date!
2010 MYSTATE FINANCIAL TRIATHLON SERIES
The fourth and final round of the 2010 MyState Financial Triathlon Series was held in perfect conditions at Beauty Point recently. Hobart’s Jonathon Hitchens was the fastest competitor for the day, completing the 750m swim, 30km cycle and 5km run in 1 hour 14 minutes and 9 seconds. Hitchens exited the swim in 6th place and put power to the pedal on the bike to take a commanding lead into the run. Veteran athlete Michael Anderson also of Hobart finished in second place just over two minutes later. Recording his best performance for the season, third across the line was Scott Schilg a further four minutes back. In the women’s field it was Devonport’s Amelia Pearson first across the line, finishing three minutes ahead of former steeplechaser and now triathlon convert Donna McFarlane. Lia Giovanovits was third a further 3 minutes back.

After leading the field out of the water junior competitor Dan Probert put in a solid performance to take the junior men’s title. It was a great hit out for Probert before heading to the School Sport Australia National Triathlon Championships in Adelaide later this week. Jess Ling won the junior female division.

While Michael Anderson dominated the veteran division it was close racing for second and third with Michael Purton (2nd) and Phill Murell (3rd) finishing just seconds apart. Sharron Hetherington took out the female category ahead of Maggie Squires and Nolene Chippandall.

The full results are available on the Launceston Triathlon Club website.

Fifteen athletes competed in all four races of the series and went into the draw for one of two $200 2XU gift vouchers. “Down South”
The siren has sounded. Its all over for another season. I’m sure there’s a fair mixture of relief and disappointment amongst everyone.
For many the season ended with their longest races of the season, either at Coles Bay or Port Macquarie last weekend or NZIM a few weeks ago. Personally I only spectated/volunteered/photographed at Ironman, and that was a big enough 19 hour day for me. Congratulations to all those stepping up to a longer distance they hadn’t contemplated in the past, if you want to see something inspirational hang around the finishing chute after the 14 hour mark of an Ironman - unfortunately it means they were all beaten by Tony Abbott - but the overwhelming emotion is something you will never forget. As the shirts on a lot of females in Port so aptly read, and this doesn’t just apply to these crazy long distances, “never never never ever never ever give up”
Prior to that was the annual handicap race, the “yep looks good to me” handicapping system may need some refining for next season, Ill have you all crossing the finish line at once somehow. Well done to everyone in the last few club races in some rather ordinary conditions.
Hopefully we will see a lot of you at the Tri south awards night, bookings essential and available through the website, between now and then have a good think about whether you would like to help out with the work behind the scenes next season and consider throwing your hand up for a spot on the committee. (Its not that bad a job) Plenty of ideas are already floating around for a bigger and better 10/11 season, new race venues, types and times already being looked into.
Safe training for all those hard-core athletes not bludging over winter (from recent experience I do believe this off season training idea might be a good one)

RACE 3: 14 February – Lake Barrington & Sheffield incorporating the MyState Financial Tasmanian Olympic Distance Championships, Cradle Coast Triathlon & Multisport

FROM THE PRESIDENT

The last month has been highlighted by some major events and great performances by members of Triathlon Tasmania. The inaugural “Hell in the Hills” point-to-point triathlon, held as part of the MyState Triathlon State Series was a great success, despite challenging conditions. Competitors were tested by the course but also treated to great hospitality by the Kentish Council. I would like to thanks the Cradle Coast club for developing and running this event to all volunteers and officials involved and to sponsors for their support.

The Australasian Police and Emergency Service games were held in and around Hobart. Apart from strong winds at the start of the triathlon, and a good sea breeze for the aquathon competitors had great weather and competition was keen in all age groups. It was also great to see member of Triathlon Tasmania doing well, and my congratulations to them, with the inter service friendly rivalry between what Tim Cox of ABC radio termed saw the ‘Guns and Hoses’ also evident. In particular I would like to acknowledge Kerry Stubbs’s work in race organisation and members and friends of Triathlon Tasmania and Triathlon South for helping to make the triathlon, duathlon and aquathon events such a success. These events, as with club races and other events, can only be run with the help of volunteers. The feedback from visitors to the state was highly complimentary, focusing particularly of the professionalism of race officials and marshalls.

Launceston Tri Club and Race Director Paul Turner have also been working hard on the Coles Bay Long Course Triathlon to be held on 28 March. This promise to be a fantastic event and I encourage as many members to compete in what must be one of the most stunning sites for a triathlon anywhere in the world.

Triathlon has also scored well in the 46th Annual Tasmanian Sports Awards. Congratulations to nominees Amelia Pearson (Female Athlete), Craig Redman (Coach) and Tim Smith, nominated in the Local Hero category for his work in developing and directing the Southern Schools Triathlon Challenge.

We have the final MyState states series race coming up at Beauty Point with the Launcetson Triathlon Club hosting the race on 14 March. This promise to be a great event and with points still up for grabs in the series I am sure we will see some great performances to cap of a great series and season.

“Down South”

Summers over L

Thankfully race season isn’t. Quiet month February huh? Not likely!!

Don’t know where to start with news from this month. Big results all over the place. The Armstrong/Hitchens battle still in full swing, in particular with some awesome results in Geelong 70.3. Weitnauer, Percival and Wilson-Haffenden bringing home plenty of medals from the Australasian Police and Emergency games, which thanks to a few tri south members and some race organiser guy from the North west ran pretty well. (well done Kerry), of course Emmas medals were won just a few days after the gruelling Summer Survival, where there were plenty more Tri south members having a go and taking podium spots. Donna Macfarlane, Chris Sullivan and others with some great results on the inaugural Run the Bridge 10km. Superfish Mia Blignaut returning to racing at the Hell in the hills casually sitting on Gambles feet for the swim, and also winning the trans Derwent swim this month. Kellevie 6 hour, Wildside MTB, our first VERY successful twilight super sprint triathlon, our first Saturday race, first open water swim, Jellyfish stings, bike stacks in the wet and wind, choppy swims, rescues - All that in the last month or so? Surely not. No time to be bored in the south of the state.

One race left to come, the annual Tri south handicap race. There will be a slight change this year, in that there will be no mass start and athletes will start according to their handicap time. Good chance for the usual front runners to have to catch up to a few.

Also this month good luck to a few attempting their first Ironman, either in Taupo or Port Mac.

Make the most of the dwindling twilight training hours everyone, see you at a race soon.

Cradle Coast Triathlon and Multisport’s great year continues. The inaurgural Kentish Hell in the Hills Triathlon was a great success and we thank everyone who supported the event. Our TRYstars training days continue to provide our junior members with inspiring and valuable advice and experience. We congratulate Matt Gaby, Andrew Watson and Fraser Lyon who were identified as Fairbrother Development athletes. We are also proud to see that Amelia Pearson (athlete of the year) and Craig Redman (coach of the year) were named as finalists in the Tasmanian Sports Awards and we wait in anticipation for the announcement! Sadly we have to say goodbye to one of our founding members and secretary who has been transferred to the South of the state for work, we wish Karen Brown all the very best. Finally, many of us are looking forward to racing the 4th and final race of the state series at Beauty Point!
